From the director of the infamous MYSTICS IN BALI comes this far superior film about an ancient evil queen possessing the body of an anthropology student. She goes on a murderous rampage (TERMINATOR style) in one ridiculous scene after another. It’s entertainment on a mythical level. Always a pleasure to watch and share with newbies.

Loved this movie in theaters, a perfect cap to the trilogy. I was excited to get a chance to review the Blu-ray. Check out some of my thoughts on the movie and the disc over at Gordon and the Whale!

DOLLS (1987)

Stuart Gordon directs my worst nightmare. I’m deathly afraid of dolls and I wanted to challenge myself and get a good scare on Halloween. It worked as usual. This super dark fairytale clocks in at a brisk 77 minutes, every single of them oozing with atmosphere and incredible doll effects. Makes my skin crawl!

When this movie came out in 1988 my dad promised to take me to see it if got straight A’s. Well I did but something happened, scheduling, business, etc. and we never made it to the theater. 22 years later, I finally got to see this in 35mm as part of kids club. And I felt like a kid again. I’ve watched this movie dozens of times on DVD through the year but on the big screen it’s magical. This is Burton’s peak, everything works.

Bonus: I ate my first corndog ever on this day!

Had the “privilege” of seeing this again Master Pancake style. The guys did their best to tear this one apart and I had some fun. I think it might have been a little bit MORE fun when we watched this as a drinking game earlier in the year. At least I could should inappropriate things at Bella.

I first saw this back in March at SXSW and definitely didn’t like it as much as everyone else. Still, at the time I did admit I could absolutely understand why people were in love with it. I just didn’t connect with the tone. However, after having imported the UK Blu-ray and sitting down and really focusing on what my issues were I think I’ve finally figured out what was rubbing me the wrong way and now I kinda love it. I still there are some really annoying, gaping plot holes and stuff but aside from that, the film does what it wants to and does it right for the most part. I hope director Sean Byrne ditches his plan to film a prequel and goes on to do something else original.
