::ATTENBERG is a weird & beautiful look at the mundane yet wild transition of a girl into a woman. Another intriguing bit of Greek cinema.::

My last movie of Sundance 2011! This movie may be even harder to get in to than DOGTOOTH (which has a similar pedigree, the director stars in ATTENBERG and they share producers) but it is ultimately rich and rewarding. Some of the comparisons of people and animals are little obvious but each new scene is delightful and weird.

Sundance 2011 Review: SOUND OF MY VOICE (2011)

::SOUND OF MY VOICE is short, simple & utterly intriguing. My kind of festival movie, one of my faves of #Sundance.::

LOVED this movie. It’s a small movie that relies on great direction, acting and a great script to keep one on the edge of his seats for the entire film. The less known, the better just know that it involves a cult (a running theme at Sundance???). There’s one small annoyance, one plot point that doesn’t get resolved but that’s because it’s planned as a trilogy. I would be perfectly fine with it standing alone (ignoring the one unexplained item) but the thought of a trilogy is intriguing. If they are all this strong, count me in!

::MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE is masterful at ever increasing tension. Paranoia is palpable due to brilliant score & superb performances.::

This is the story of a woman (Mary Kate and Ashley’s younger sister Elizabeth Olsen) who escapes a cult (led by a magnificent John Hawkes) and ends up with her sister. However, she suspects the cult may be trying to get her back. It’s a wonderful character study and exercise in paranoid tension. Great stuff. Look out for this one!

::TAKE SHELTER is an apocalyptic paranoia thriller, American suburbs style. Hypnotic, haunting & featuring a stunning Shannon performance.::

A wonderful piece about relationships and trust under the guise of a suburbs-thriller. Michael Shannon is absolutely incredible in this. The less you know, the better you are. Just go see it ASAP when it’s released and let is wash over you.

Sundance 2011: IN A BETTER WORLD (2010)

::IN A BETTER WORLD has too many manipulative moments to be great. Engaging story but mostly unconvincing emotional beats.::

This is the story of two boys, both from homes broken in different ways, who form a friendship that could prove to be destructive and even fatal to those around them. A morality tale that is a bit too forceful with its emotions.

::BELLFLOWER is pretty awesome. Feels *truly* independent & like no compromises were made in its creation.::

Evan Glodell wrote, directed and stars in BELLFLOWER. He also built a car that shoots fire, a flamethrower and the FUCKING CAMERAS! It doesn’t get more indie than this. What’s it about? It’s a love story. Of course. Sure, under a critical eye, things could be trimmed, some of the acting is questionable but the indie spirit is so raw and full of passion that all that gets a big, fat PASS. Awesome film. I hope it gets out for everyone to see!

::SUBMARINE is a wonderfully poignant & often hilarious story of learning about responsibility in relationships. Ayoade nails it.::

Really loved this movie, a great British coming-of-age story that’s full of charm and sometimes very dark humor. The leads are wonderful as are Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor and Sally Hawkins. I predict this will be a treasured classic one day. Wonderfully realized by director Richard Ayoade (Moss on The IT Crowd, Dean Lerner/Thornton Reed on Darkplace).
