Write-ups will be rushed (and probably full of typos!) as I’m desperately trying to catch up! Sorry!!

So we went from a Gottlieb masterpiece to… well, this. I can’t remember if I’d seen this movie before but I after sitting through it at Zzang!!! I’m going to call it ‘new’ because I feel like, even though I’m totally committed to never missing a Zzang!!!, I may have skipped out on this. This is an EXTREMELY goofy comedy about cavemen starring Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid, and Shelley Long. There’s like 4 words of English in the entire movie, everything is just grunts. The story is something about a underdog caveman (Starr) going after a girl that isn’t his. He gets banished and seeks to get revenge. The only thing I even remotely enjoyed about this was the stop-motion animated creatures. They weren’t done particularly well, but they were sort of amusing.

The sad part is, during the Q&A Gottlieb talked about an early version of the screenplay that was far more intellectual. And while I don’t need totally high-brow humor to enjoy a comedy, I just don’t respond well to people running around grunting wildly at each other for 90 minutes. Just not my thing.

Leroy “Bruce Leroy” Green wants to obtain The Glow. To do so he must find the master and… well that’s not important. He runs afoul of Sho Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem in the theater during a screening of FISTS OF FURY.

That’s basically it. The joy isn’t in the plot it’s in the ridiculous characters, the (actually pretty awesome at times) kung-fu and the music. Oh my God the music! This movie could be classified as a musical and there’s not just a Cindy Lauper rip-off, there’s a Prince rip off too. Like BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA this movie is pretty always kicked into high gear and while I still content that BTiLC is the most entertaining movie of all time, THE LAST DRAGON certainly tries its damndest to give it a run for its money.

Who’s the mastuh?

SHO NUFF!

Another edition of Zzang!!!, the all 80s 35mm series at the Alamo Drafthouse that I feel was created just for me.

In ZAPPED!, Peyton (Willie Aames) and Barney (Scot Baio) are two high school friends working together on a science project. While running some experiments one day, Barney (the genius of the bunch) accidentally gives himself telekinetic powers. It’s hijinks from that point on as Barney uses his powers for fun and girls.

Such a fun movie. Granted it’s pretty minor in the ocean of 80s comedies especially compared to the great science based 80s comedies (WEIRD SCIENCE, REAL GENIUS, etc.). You can’t deny the fun chemistry between Baio and Aames and with Scatman Crothers in the cast mix you have a solid little film. Plenty of laughs here.

Zzang!!!: VALLEY GIRL (1983)

I’m so sure!

The Alamo Drafthouse (and specifically programmer Zack Carlson) have a new series called Zzang!!! and it’s all about the celebration of 80s movies! All in 35mm of course! This was the kickoff night and this is another series I don’t plan on missing.

Valley girl Julie inexplicably falls for Hollywood punk boy Randy (Nicolas Cage). The rest of her flock of seagulls think she’s meant to be with Tommy (Michael Bowen). Julie must figure out what it is she wants – the boy of her dreams or the affection of her friends.

Those that think VALLEY GIRL is just some dated, early 80s teen romantic comedy don’t get it. This movie is obviously about the embittered relationship between late purebred punk (which died too young) and new wave. A much smarter man with much more time could explain this in detail but just keep it in your mind next time you watch the movie. This movie doesn’t embrace or define the 80s, it defies them. And that’s why it stand the test of time as a true timeless classic regardless of the silly lingo the valley girls introduced to the world.

Outside of the music scene subtext, Nicolas Cage puts in an early performance here, one that is much more muted than almost any of his others to come. The music is awesome. The whole thing is funny and charming. It comes with my highest recommendation.
