COLD SWEAT aka SUDOR FRIO (2010)

Watched: 3/3/2011

I watched this at home in preparation for a SXSW interview with director Adrián García Bogliano. The story is simple, a man goes to look for his girlfriend who has been lured into a strange home. Inside, things gets weird and explosive. It’s a simple film filled with simple, primal pleasures. I knew as soon as I finished watching this I absolutely had to watch it again on the big screen at the fest. Fortunately, I had a great interview with Adrián and was afforded the opportunity to intro his film and lead Q&A with him. After the fest he gave me some of his earlier works. Look for some write-ups on those later.

Horror Movie Night: THE CURSE (1987)

Posted in 2011 New, Horror Movie Night, Movies (2011) with tags , , on March 2, 2011 by btsjunkie

A meteor crash lands on Wil Wheaton’s farm in this loose adaptation of Lovecraft’s “The Colour Out of Space”. The meteorite melts into the ground and things start to get weird as fruits becomes infested with maggots and explode and people turn into weird mutation blobby people. Directed by David Keith (!), produced/2nd unit directed by Lucio Fulci (!!), and featuring the best plucking-spores-from-ass scene of the ’80s, THE CURSE is an curious film that is actually highly entertaining. It spawned 3 sequels, the rest of which will play Horror Movie Night in 2011 and 2012.

RGECA 2010: The Willbreaker

Posted in 2011 New, Movies (2011), RGECA 2010 with tags , , on February 27, 2011 by btsjunkie

Watched: 2/27/2011

The Reel Grit Endurance Challenge started in LA and we Austin folks finally got permission to hold our own. The basic premise is a film marathon where all the movies are generally considered awful, participants may not talk through the films, if one must use the restroom one must do so in less than a minute or be forced to stand for the remainder of the film, etc. It is exactly what its name implies. The problem is, it seems we Austinites have more tolerance for crap…

The thing about RGEC is that it ends with a Willbreaker, a movie that is supposed to be so bad nobody can stand it, it’s the movie that destroys your soul after 12 hours of awfulness. And the reward for making through is… the Willbreaker is a secret everyone who participates takes to the grave. I can’t even tell you when it was made, who was in it, anything… I WILL say, though, that it wasn’t the worst movie of the night and I’d probably watch it again someday if it was put on in front of me and I didn’t have the power to change it.

::Now for movie #7, LA pick LEFT BEHIND II: TRIBULATION FORCE. I’m hoping rapture saves us from this movie. #RGECA #fb::

::”There’s no halfway with the antichrist.”::

::I wish LEFT BEHIND II was more like MEGIDDO: OMEGA CODE 2.::

::I didn’t get enough out of LEFT BEHIND II to say much about it. Haven’t seen the first. Wasn’t unbearable. #RGECA #fb::

Yeah, I dunno. Some shit happens, Kirk Cameron gives a lengthy sermon, some more shit happen, sermon, repeat, repeat, some lightning shoots out of the eyes of two old Jewish men. End. I was barely functioning at this point and the movie didn’t do anything for me, didn’t even make me hate it. It just… was.

::Movie #6 is an Austin pick… FRED THE MOVIE. I’m actually quite scared. #RGECA #fb::

::So far FRED THE MOVIE is the most obnoxious thing I’ve ever seen. This kid is so fucking annoying. What’s wrong with you YouTube?! #RGECA::

::Holy Hell. FRED THE MOVIE is a physical assault. Comedy at its most annoying. The gay pet store owners were kinda awesome, tho. #RGECA #fb::

And at one point, in a Tweet to a curious friend I called FRED: THE MOVIE a “prickly wet fart of a movie.”

This movie isn’t just BAD, it’s ANNOYING. Which almost makes it the worst of the night but it has a plot so it’s automatically better than GLITTER. There’s also one SUPER funny bit in a pet store that must have been improvised or written by someone other than anyone else involved with this movie. I guess this Fred guy is a YouTube sensation and more than anything else it really showed me how out of touch I am with today’s youth. So it made me feel like an old man. So, in conclusion, fuck you Fred. Fuck you in your stupid face, grow some balls and talk like a man. You fucking ninny. Get off my lawn! Feel our pain:

RGECA 2010: GLITTER (2001)

Before this started I Tweeted:

::Movie #5 is another LA pick… GLITTER. This will be a cakewalk. Nothing truly awful yet. #RGECA #fb::

During GLITTER I Tweeted:

::Dear GLITTER, please get better or worse. This slow ride on the mediocrity train is taxing at best. Love, #RGECA #fb::

When it was over I tweeted:

::There are many movies out there worse than GLITTER but I’m doubtful any will play #RGECA tonight. Boring as sin. #fb::

THIS is the kind of crap I expected from RGEC. My main problem with this movie is that it’s not really a movie. It’s a vanity project that has no progression of plot or character. Mariah is the main character but she never has any real conflict that drives the film, the conflict is with her MANAGER. So… we have a character just moving through nothingness doing nothing with no consequences or threats. Eat me, GLITTER. I hate you.

Tweet review:

::RIDING ON THE BUS WITH MY SISTER was tender, touching and hilarious. Exquisite direction by Huston. O’Donnell shines. #RGECA #fb::

Okay, so that’s a lie. This was an epic misfire by everyone involved. MacDowell’s character is a complete bitch and has a character change out of left field, O’Donnell overplays the mentally challenged thing and the whole production is completely flat. And balls out hilarious. I’ll let a video speak for this movie:
